14143 EMAMECTIN BENZOATE ( ATTICUS,SYNGEN ) DATE ( 23C = TROPICAL AND SUBTROPICAL, PALM FRUIT, EDIBLE PEEL SUBGROUP ) UNDER EVALUATION

Reduced Risk Status:
IPM Compatibility: Per Requester: Very Good Fit; No other material effective on this pest is registered for use in dates. It is an exotic, invasive pest, with urgent need tool to control it. This will be used in an eradication program. The only other control method available is removing palms and destroying them on first sign of infestation. Date production in general has low pesticide use overall due to strong IPM practices; we expect that this product will be used sparingly and only when necessary. An extensive trapping program has been in place by county and university researchers that will indicate when/where the pest is present to inform treatment decisions. Dates are hand-pollinated, not pollinated by bees:06/26;
Reasons for need: Rhynchophorus palmarum (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), common name South American palm weevil. Invasive pest in California, currently established in San Diego County (B-rated by CDFA). Serious threat to date industry. Larval feeding of this beetle occurs in the apical meristem or the palm heart. The feeding results in palm mortality by causing the entire crown to collapse and fall off. Phoenix dactylifera has been confirmed as a host plant. This is an exotic pest with no natural enemies. Highly invasive, has spread through urban forest in San Diego and is threatening to enter commercial orchards in nearby Riverside & Imperial counties. Infestation always causes plant death:06/26;

PCR Use Pattern: IR-4 HQ Suggests to see Tree-Ject label instructions for Palm for tree injection use: Make applications into palms 2-3 feet from the soil level, above the lignified tissues. One to 4 injection points, drilled into the palm tissue 4” deep, or up to 1/3 trunk diameter. Injection volumes of 4% emamectin benzoate, approximately 10 ml/2.5cm diameter. Apply when soil is moist, soil temperatures are above 45°F. Ambient temperatures are between 40° to 90°F. and during the 24-hour period when transpiration is greatest, typically before 2:00 PM. Otherwise, requested for ground, crown spray, or otherwise with rate per MFG with 2-3 applications and 7 to 14 day pre-harvest interval.
