Reduced Risk Status:
IPM Compatibility: PER REQUESTERED: GOOD IPM FIT; THIS PESTICIDE PLAYS SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN AN EXISTING IPM PROGRAM:09/19
Reasons for need: BROWN MARMORATED STINK BUG; SEVERE FRUIT DAMAGE; KIWIFRUIT PRODUCTION, PARTICULARLY GOLD-FLESHED KIWIFRUIT (ACTINIDIA CHINENSIS), IS A NEWLY INTRODUCED CROP TO THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S.; GOLD KIWIFRUIT COMMANDS A HIGHER PRICE THAN GREEN-FLESHED KIWIFRUIT (A. DELICIOSA) AND IS GENERALLY PREFERRED DUE TO ITS SWEETER FLAVOR; ALTHOUGH CA IS A MAJOR PRODUCER OF KIWIFRUIT (GREEN KIWIFRUIT) IN THE U.S, IT HAS NOT YET BEEN SUCCESSFUL GROWING GOLD KIWIFRUIT BECAUSE OF THE HIGH LIGHT INTENSITY AND ARID CONDITIONS THAT CAUSE PLANT STRESS AND FRUIT TO SHRIVEL; HOWEVER, THERE IS A GREAT POTENTIAL FOR THIS INDUSTRY IN THE TEMPERATE, HUMID CLIMATES OF THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S.; GOLD KIWIFRUIT IS A HIGH VALUE AND HIGH INPUT CROP; INVESTMENTS TOWARDS THE SUCCESS OF THIS DEVELOPING INDUSTRY IN AL HAVE BEEN SUBSTANTIAL, WITH A COST OF ABOUT $45,000 PER ACRE FOR THE CURRENT PLANTING; HOWEVER, RETURNS ARE EXPECTED TO APPROACH $80,000/ACRE AT PEAK PRODUCTION; CURRENTLY, AL HAS THE LARGEST ACREAGE (~160 ACRES) OF CULTIVATED GOLD KIWIFRUIT IN THE U.S.; THERE IS A GROWING INTEREST IN THE EXPANSION OF THIS LUCRATIVE INDUSTRY IN THE SOUTHEAST, BUT THE NEW INVASIVE BROWN MARMORATED STINK BUG (BMSB), HALYOMORPHA HALYS (HEMIPTERA: PENTATOMIDAE), THREATENS SURVIVAL OF THIS BUDDING INDUSTRY; BMSB ADULTS AND NYMPHS FEED ON THE CROP BY SUCKING SAP FROM LEADERS, YOUNG LEAVES, SHOOTS AND FRUITS, AND CAUSE SIGNIFICANT YIELD LOSS; INJURED YOUNG FRUIT DEFORM AND DROP PREMATURELY; MATURE FRUIT GENERALLY SHOW INTERNAL SYMPTOMS OF WHITE ‘SPONGY’ TISSUE GROWTH AT THE POINT OF INJURY, AND ROT EVENTUALLY IN STORAGE; WITH AN INCREDIBLY HIGH POPULATION, BMSB THREATENS ECONOMIC PRODUCTION OF GOLDEN KIWIFRUIT; PRODUCTS EFFECTIVE ON BMSB IN OTHER FRUIT CROPS ARE NOT LABELED ON KIWIFRUIT, EXCEPT FOR 2019 SEC. 18'S IN AL FOR DINOTEFURAN AND BIFENTHRIN
