Western flower thrips are crucial vectors for tospoviruses like Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) and Impatiens necrotic spot virus (INSV). In the U.S., TSWV primarily affects vegetables and some ornamentals, while INSV targets mostly ornamentals. Symptoms in vegetables include stunting, bronzing, leaf curling, and distorted fruit with necrotic rings. Controlling thrips is challenging due to their resistance to many pesticides and their tendency to feed deep within plant tissues. Effective management requires integrating various strategies and may benefit from combining existing pesticides with new technologies to delay resistance development. The requester is proposing to test a push-and-pull strategy: 1) Apply an aggregation pheromone such as the commercial product Thripline (F. occidentalis pheromone neryl (S)-2-methylbutanoate) to draw thrips out of hiding (pull strategy) just before pesticides are applied, 2) Apply Captiva (capsicum-based product) which agitates the thrips to move about on the crop plants (push strategy). This product should be used in a tank mix with a conventional insecticide or a biopesticide. Options include: 1) PLINAZOLIN TECHNOLOGY (isocycloseram; industry standard), 2) Exirel (cyantraniliprole), 3) Spear-T (GS-omega/kappa-Hxtx-Hv1a), 4) Mycotol (Lecanicillium muscarium Ve6), 5) LalGuard M52 OD (Metarhizium brunneum Strain F52), 6) PFR-97 (Isaria fumosorosea Apopka Strain 97 (ATCC 20874; OMRI listed), 7) BotaniGard or Mycotrol (Beauveria bassiana strain GHA; Mycotrol is OMRI listed, 8) Bountify (Burkholderia rinojensis (MBI-306)); if Bountify is not available for testing, use Venerate XC (Burkholderia spp. Strain A396; OMRI listed), 9) 1401EC (safflower and clove oils; listed for organic production in Japan). The requester is also suggesting to tank mix these products insect bait Combi Protec Insect Bait (blend of plant extracts, sugar and proteins) to “pull” the thrips out of hiding and increase thrips feeding, thereby bringing the thrips into contact with more of the insecticide more quickly.
