PCR Reason for Need: (8/18/2020) McGrath,Margaret: Most widespread disease of crop group. Organic growers need more effective products. Conventional growers have expressed interest in incorporating biopesticides into their fungicide programs. There are new products to consider evaluating including MBI-121, Theia, Guarda (not organic). (9/2/2020) Rahman,Mahfuz: We have increasing number of organic growers, who do not want to use any harsh chemicals. (9/2/2020) Miller,Sally: Biopesticides may be helpful in fungicide resistance management. Fungicide resistance is an important issue in powdery mildew pathogens. (9/3/2020) Stone,Alex:Powdery mildew is increasingly problematic in Oregon, and organic farmers need materials for its control.
PCR Details:
Study Goals: The purpose of this study was to generate efficacy and crop safety data for a variety of organic fungicides. This research aimed to support the registration of effective and safe management tools for cucurbits to control downy mildew and powdery mildew. Treatments were applied preventatively as weekly foliar sprays to cucumber, pumpkin and squash. Products were tested alone and in combinations or rotations, including 1) Kocide 3000 (copper hydroxide), 2) Microthiol Disperss (sulfur), 3) MBI-121 (extract of Reynoutria sachalinensis + Bacillus nakamurai), 4) Theia (Bacillus subtilis strain AFS032321), 5) Trillium (thyme oil), 6) Serifel (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain MBI 600), 7) Ranman (cyazofamid), 8) Orondis Ultra (mandipropamid + oxathiapiprolin), 9) Stargus (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens strain F727), 10) Regalia (extract of Reynoutria sachalinensis), 11) Proline (prothioconazole), 12) Vivando (metrafenone), 13) Cevya (mefentrifluconazole), and 14) Prolivo (pyriofenone). Disease incidence and severity as well as number of fruits per plant and phytotoxicity data were collected when and where feasible [HQ: 10/25 AA].

IN TERMS OF FOLIA NECROSIS, ALL TESTED PRODUCTS DID NOT REDUCE DISEASE COMPARED TO UNTREATED CONTROL. ONLY STANDARD CONTROL KOCIDE 3000 SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED DISEASE. POWDERY MILDEW MANAGEMENT IN PUMPKINS: NINE WEEKLY SPRAYS WERE APPLIED. NONE OF THE TESTED BIOPESTICIDES WERE ABLE TO MANAGE POWDERY MILDEW. ALTHOUGH THEIA SIGNIFICANTLY DID NOT REDUCE THE DISEASE ITS ABILITY TO CONTROL THE DISEASE WAS SIGNIFICANTLY SIMILAR TO STANDARD CONTROL KOCIDE 3000.

ALL TESTED PRODUCTS AND GROWER STANDARD KOCIDE 3000 WERE NOT ABLE TO REDUCE THE DISEASE INCIDENCE, DISEASE SEVERITY ON LEAVES AND DISEASE SEVERITY ON CANOPY. RESEARCHER THINK THAT LACK OF EFFICACY MAY BE PARTLY DUE TO DOWNY MILDEW HAVING ALREADY STARTED TO DEVELOP IN THE EXPERIMENT AT THE TIME OF FIRST APPLICATION, WHICH IS EARLIER THAN PREVIOUS YEARS. NUMBER OF FRUITS PER PLANT IN TRIL-21 WAS SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER THAN UNTREATED CONTROL AND MBI-121, BUT NOT SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER THAN OTHER TREATMENTS. NO PHYTOTOXICITY WAS OBSERVED ON CULTIVAR “MARKETMORE76”. POWDERY MILDEW MANAGEMENT IN PUMPKINS: SIX SPRAYS WERE APPLIED. POWDERY MILDEW SIGNS WERE OBSERVED BOTH ON UPPER AND LOWER SURFACE FOR DATA COLLECTION. ALL TESTED PRODUCTS REDUCED POWDERY MILDEW WHEN COMPARED WITH UNTREATED CONTROL. ALSO, ALL TESTED PRODUCTS (INCLUDING STANDARD CONTROL KOCIDE 3000) HAD STATISTICALLY SIMILAR EFFICACY EXCEPT AVIV + TIMOREX ACT, WHICH HAD SLIGHTLY HIGHER DISEASE BUT LOWER DISEASE THAN UNTREATED CONTROL. NO TREATMENT CONTROLLED POWDERY MILDEW ON LOWER LEAF SURFACES. PHYTOTOXICITY WAS NOT OBSERVED ON CULTIVAR “GOLD CHALLENDER”.
