Reasons for need: Itchgrass [Rottboellia cochinchinensis (Lour.). Currently, the sugarcane industry is limited to paraquat for non-selective weed control utilizing post-directed/shielded/hooded applications. With concerns about the future of paraquat’s registration status, other herbicide options are needed. Glufosinate-ammonium may also provide benefits in controlling troublesome broadleaf weeds such as divine nightshade [Solanum nigrescens (Mart. & Gal.)], ragweed parthenium (Parthenium hysterophorus L.), and morningglory (Ipomoea spp.):06/24/sb

Comments: No key exports noted. The use pattern requested is for a directed or hooded/shielded placement and is different from PR# 09960; Glufosinate will injure foliage that is contacted. This injury to is both intentional and acceptable. Supporting data shows effectiveness against itchgrass, a weed of particular interest, according to American Sugar Cane League representatives:06/24/sb;

Foster, Matthew 23-LA-DMP RECD 5784.pdf 06/24 Liberty applied once to row middles and across lower canes (≤ 12”) at 29 or 44 fl oz/a (0.53 or 0.8 lb ai/a) when itchgrass was 1-2”, 4-6” or 6-10” tall. Excellent control of 1-2” itchgrass through 21 days after treatment (DAT) from both rates. Moderate initial control of 4-6” itchgrass but increased to ≥ 94% at 21 DAT. Neither rate performed well on 6-10” itchgrass. Pooled across three trials, biomass and sugar yield from both rates not different from standard treatment, paraquat.
